Meanwhile, a friend has talked me into trying being out in public bare foot. To my surprise, it's not as problematic as I expected - as long as it's dry and the ground is free of problems like glass or stones and not rocky tarmac, it's quite easy.
I walked home from my local train station (about 10 minutes) barefoot (including escalators) then next time I went to a munch I walked there barefoot (about 20 minutes) and spent the evening that way, shoeing up only for the journey home.
